It is often said at a bowls club committee meeting “The most important part of a Bowls Club is the green. Not to spend money on it is a false economy”. It is difficult to argue against that statement. Of course the green is important; without a decent one a club will find it hard to exist. Us bowlers are a funny breed, we always want the green to be exactly as we want it - and we all want it to bowl differently!
But I would argue that the green is second in importance. The most important part of a Bowls club are its members. How could a green be maintained if it were not for the hard work put in by the green keeper!
And without willing workers to help with refreshments (men as well as ladies), or to decorate the club house when it needs it, or to help with the upkeep of the grounds which includes erecting fences, cutting hedges, repairing and maintaining seats etc. where would a club be?
And what about those brave people who agree to face the wrath of some members by acting as captain, chairman, bar steward, or committee member.
